General Psychiatry Section

1. Introduction

The General Psychiatry Section of the APP is committed to the integration of analytic thinking into general psychiatry. In a situation in the NHS, with current high workloads, bed shortages, increasing administrative pressures and high rates of burn out, providing forums for discussion of stressful and problematic areas of work remain the central aspect of the section's activities.

4. Activities

Educational:  The committee considers initiatives both at local, regional and national levels relating to the integration of an analytic contribution within the field of general psychiatry. Projects are being undertaken in conjunction with the APP Nursing Section, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and in clinical teaching of the psychiatric trainee.

Administrative:  Research/ Publications.Reports related to activity in the section can be found in the APP Newsletter. Individual members research papers may be published in the APP journal, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Clinical:  Members of the section are available to offer advice on clinical educational issues.

Liason:  The subsection liases with other sections of the APP, especially the Nursing section over considered joint activities. It also liases with the general and psychotherapy sections of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. General Psychiatry Chairman is APP representative to ISPS (U.K.).

It is to be hoped that APP members located in other regions in the country might wish to set up their own interest days. The General Psychiatry Section remains available to give full support to any such initiatives.

8. Virtual Committee

At our last national conference, "Risk Assessment: Forms or Feelings?" on December 6th 2002 we announced the launch of a new "virtual" committee for the General Psychiatry Section allowing you to receive minutes, suggest agenda items and contribute to the debate.
